Marji A. Swanson focuses her practice in the areas of government and municipal law and labor and employment law. In the course of her government and municipal work, she has represented municipalities and special districts in all areas from municipal prosecution to general counsel advising these entities regarding subjects such as Open Meetings Act, Freedom of Information Act, Local Records Act, ethics laws and conflicts of interest, election issues, intergovernmental cooperation, human resource matters, public bidding and contract requirements, constitutional issues, as well as general operations, Board governance and other related matters.
As a labor and employment law attorney, Marji represents both private and public employers, including small to mid-size businesses, counties, forest preserve districts, park districts, school districts, municipalities, community colleges, public safety communication centers, and other special districts. Her experience includes collective bargaining and she has extensive experience representing employers in all aspects of labor and employment law, including grievance and interest arbitrations, employee discrimination claims, civil rights matters, implementation of personnel policies and mitigating risk in employment decisions, as well as counseling on disciplinary actions and investigations, reductions in force, and compliance with state and federal employment laws. Marji also routinely presents training seminars for clients regarding union and management relations, management training, human resources best practices, and other areas designed to mitigate risk.
Marji has successfully defended employers before administrative agencies such as the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, the Illinois State Labor Relations Board, Boards of Fire and Police Commissioners, the Office of Civil Rights, the Illinois Department of Employment Security, The Illinois Department of Labor, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the Illinois Human Rights Commission.
Marji also represents employees in employment related issues such as employment contracts, severance and release agreements, covenants not to compete, employment discrimination and harassment, whistleblower, wrongful termination, and other employee rights and disputes. In the course of her employment work, representing management and employees has given her a unique perspective on the motivations and concerns present in many employment disputes.
Marji earned her B.S. in political science from Illinois State University in 1996. At ISU Marji was a Distinguished Scholar of the Political Science Department. She also was an undergraduate legal intern with the Legal Department of the Town of Normal, Illinois and was a member of the Mock Trial Team.
After college, Marji attended Chicago Kent College of Law, IIT, graduated in 2000 and that year was admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois and the United States District Court Northern District of Illinois. During her law school career, Marji was a member of the Dean’s List, was a CALI recipient for Pre-Trial Litigation, and was an intern with the Law Offices of Chicago-Kent in the area of Employment Litigation.
Ms. Swanson is a member of the Will County Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association serving on the Local Government Section Council.
