George F. Mahoney III is a founding member of Mahoney, Silverman & Cross, LLC. His practice focuses on zoning and land development, government and municipal law, litigation and appellate practice. Born in Joliet, Illinois, he attended Lewis University where he majored in Political Science and graduated with high honors. He received his Juris Doctorate from DePaul University College of Law and was admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois and the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, including the Trial Bar. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
George’s community activities include serving as the Chair of the United Way Annual Appeal, and a member of the Board of Directors of Northwestern Health Care Network. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Joliet and was elected its President for 1989 – 1990. From 1983 through 2013 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Silver Cross Hospital and Medical Center, and was elected for multiple terms as its First Vice Chair.
George is a member of the Will County and Illinois State Bar Associations. He was elected and served as Will County Bar President in 1984. His Illinois State Bar (ISBA) activities include being elected as a member of its Assembly from 1986 through 1992. Since 1992 he has been a member of the ISBA Standing Committee on Judicial Evaluations, serving as its Chair from 1995 through 1997 as well as from 2005 through 2007. He also served on the Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board and the Illinois Judicial Ethics Committee. He was appointed as the Chair of the ISBA 2004 Future of the Legal Profession Conference. In 1998 and 2005 he received the Illinois State Bar Association Board of Governors Award. George was elected to the Board of Directors of the Illinois Bar Foundation and was its President from 2010 through 2012. In 2017, George was inducted as a Laureate by the Board of Regents of the Illinois State Bar Association’s Academy of Illinois Lawyers.
From 1999 through 2011, George was a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education and was Chair of its Board 2009-2010.
In 2013, George was elected to and serves on the Board of Trustees of The John Marshall Law School, Chicago, Illinois.
From 1995 through 2002 he was appointed by and served on the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee. He is also a member of the Illinois Supreme Court Judicial Performance Evaluations Committee.
George served as a Special Assistant Attorney General of the State of Illinois from 1984 to 2006 where he represented the State of Illinois Department of Transportation and Department of Natural Resources in eminent domain proceedings.
Along with David J. Silverman, he has authored “Governmental Financing of Development” in Illinois Land Use Law, published by the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, and has lectured at Continuing Legal Education and other seminars for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Illinois Municipal League and governmental bodies on various aspects of government and land use law including for the Illinois State Bar Association course, “Local Government: Issues in Challenging Times” and the Planning and Development Committee of the County Board of McHenry County, Illinois on land use and zoning law. George’s areas of practice including land use and zoning law, local government law, civil and business litigation including representing property owners in eminent domain proceedings, and appellate practice.
